MANASSAS, Va. -- Each year, the electric cooperatives of Virginia, Maryland & Delaware host two days filled with energy career experiences for high school (or older) young women who are interested or curious about a career in the power industry. They’ll get an up-close look at what it’s like to work on a line crew, in a substation, with advanced-metering technology, or as a fiber broadband technician, for instance.
Instructors engage with students through activities in the classroom and outdoors at the Electric Cooperative Training Centers in Salisbury, Maryland (on Oct. 2), and Palmyra, Virginia (Oct. 30). Students can pick the location that works for them.
Attendees will learn about safety on the job, including how to safely climb a utility pole and operate a bucket truck. And they’ll take turns flying a drone, locating underground power lines and trying to repair an electrical issue while wearing heavy safety gloves. Students also will meet with industry human resources professionals to discuss how their interests might mesh with a career in the energy sector.
The vibe is fun and empowering. It’s a hands-on, all-questions-welcome environment.
