Time-of-Use Pricing

NOVEC is currently conducting a pilot program for time-of-use pricing. The program gives participants a slight discount on electricity consumed during off-peak hours. Peak hours are between 1-6 p.m. on weekdays from June through September. Off-peak hours are all other hours throughout the year.

Basic Rate per kWh Time-of-use Rate per kWh
Between 1-6 p.m. $0.097 $0.334
All other hours $0.097 $0.079

Time-of-use pricing could result in a lower electricity bill for customers who are able to significantly shift the number of kilowatt hours they use from on-peak to off-peak periods. However, not shifting use could result in higher bills with this program. The more customers who use power off-peak however, the greater the savings will be to all NOVEC customers.

If adding an electric vehicle significantly changes your home electricity use, you may be able to save money by enrolling in the time-of-use pricing program rather than continuing to pay the basic rate. As a guide, if you drive your electric vehicle 1,000 miles a month, you would use approximately 250 kWh of electricity per month just for your vehicle. Use the U.S. Department of Energy's electric vehicle calculator to see which option is right for you.

Ways to Save

There are several ways to shift energy usage, and they depend on individual factors, such as how many people live in your household, how you heat your home, how your hot water is generated, how much energy you use to begin with, and your individual energy usage patterns.

Programmable thermostats also allow customers to program their heating and cooling systems to use less power while they are away from home.
